About the Faculty

The Faculty of Pharmacy, Lead City University, Ibadan was established in the year 2021. Academic programmes commenced in January 2021for the 2021/2022 Session, with admission of first set of students comprising direct entry and transfer students (Fourteen students in all). That was after the Advisory visits by the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) and Resource Verification Exercise by the National University Commission (NUC). Both regulatory bodies gave the University the green light for the initial take-off, followed by formal approval by the University Senate.

The vision of the faculty has been to train students and produce Pharmacists who will become trailblazing professionals in the pharmaceutical practices and indeed in the Healthcare team and space. Thus, our products are to be awarded the degree of the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.).

The PharmD curriculum in Pharmacy training has become the grand norm as it promotes better patient outcomes as well a shift in emphasis from the product to the patient. Lead City University (LCU) then joined the league of the very few Universities in Nigeria that commenced Pharmacy training with PharmD curriculum as different from those who began with the Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm) curriculum and who are now converting to PharmD. The programme at LCU adopted the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) curriculum, approved by NUC, for the take-off. However, with the introduction of a new curriculum, Core Curriculum for Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS), by NUC, the Faculty (as is the case with all programmes of LCU) immediately plugged in and has since been adopted CCMAS starting with the 2023/2024 academic session.

The young Faculty, which humbly started with 7 full-time academics, 7 part-time (Adjunct Lecturers) and 2 non-academic staff (Lab. Technologists) in 2021, was coordinated by Dr. Tejumade Ujomu. Early 2022, Dr. Ujomu proceeded to advance her career beyond the shores of Nigeria which necessitated the posting of Prof. Olusola Ladokun to continue the coordination of the nascent Faculty. This was followed by the appointment of Dr. I. O Adeyemi of the Department of Pharmacology as the Dean of the Faculty from 5th of September 2022.

The Faculty has since made significant progress in lifts and bounds. Today, can boast of about 23 full-time academics and 7 non-academic staff (Technologists), who are ably supported by several Adjunct Lecturers drawn from Prestigious Universities across Nigeria. Our student enrolment has increased from 14 students at inception in 2021/2022, to about 230 students in the 2024/2025 session. The Faculty at the beginning of 2024/2025 session commenced its first 500 level and shall be graduating its first qualified Pharmacists by the end of 2025/2026 session. Our students are perhaps the most well behaved and orderly students in the University. Their dress code of lilac shirt on black skirt or trouser by both female and male students stand them out among student at the university. It is worth noting that students of the Faculty of Pharmacy have been performing excellently within and outside the University. They are either first or first/second runner-up in debates, quizzes and sports at competitions involving students in the University and among other Faculties of Pharmacy in universities that been operational several decades before ours came on board. They are active participants in the activities of The Pharmaceutical Association of Nigerian Students (PANS) locally and nationally.

Currently, the Faculty of Pharmacy Lead City University, Ibadan can boast to be with one of the best well-equipped laboratories in Nigeria. These laboratories cut across the core Pharmaceutical Sciences of Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology, Pharmacognosy and Pharmaceutical Microbiology. This is in addition to a well-equipped state of the art Clinical Pharmacy laboratory. Interestingly, the Faculty enjoys the possession of medicinal plant garden (with a wide range of medicinal plants consisting of shrubs and trees of varying families and species), herbarium, and animal house. In addition, the Faculty is well laid out with properly designed and spacious classrooms, offices, as well as full complement of Lecturers in the six departments namely: Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Department of Pharmaceutics and Industrial Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Department of Pharmacognosy, Department of Clinical Pharmacy & Pharmacy Administration and the Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Biotechnology. Each of the departments is headed by a qualified academic staff, while the Faculty is currently under the headship of Prof. Isaac Olawale Adeyemi as Dean.

Recently, (between the 1st and 3rd of December 2024), The Faculty of Pharmacy received the Accreditation Panel from the NUC. The Team during their debriefing visit to the Vice-Chancellor, commended the Faculty for the diligence and commitment of the leadership, staff and students towards upholding the required standard for the Pharm. D. Programme. The result of the Accreditation Panel is officially being awaited. It is hoped that the Pharm.D Programme of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Lead City University Ibadan, will be fully accredited. In the course of the year 2025, the Faculty will be receiving another accreditation team from the PCN.

The following programmes are available under the Faculty of Pharmacy:
  1. Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.)
