About the College

Departments of Anatomy, Physiology, Nursing, Physiotherapy Medical Laboratory Science and Radiography started in the
Faculty of Science. These were carved out to form The Faculty of
Basic Medical Sciences in 2021 under the Deanship of Dr.
Magnus Adebo Thomas (later Prof.). The Faculty of Basic
Medical Sciences formed the foundation of the College of
Medicine when the Medicine and Surgery with Dentistry were
approved for take-off by the National Universities Commission.

The 2021/2022 Session started with the College of Medicine
coming into existence in the University. Under the College, there
are two Programmes and a Faculty. The Programmes include
Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) as well as Dentistry (Doctor of
Dentistry) (BDS). The number of registered students in the
MBBS programmes rose steadily.

The 2022/2023 Session started with the College of Medicine moving into the ultramodern, three
storey edifice: the new College of Medicine Building with Prof. Magnus Thomas as the Provost.
The College building houses most of the Departments in the College. In the building are
Departmental offices, Staff offices (with their conveniences), classrooms, seminar rooms,
lecture theatres and a canteen to boot. Under the College, we have two Programmes and a
Faculty. The Programmes include Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) as well as Dentistry (Doctor of
Dentistry) (DDS). The number of registered students in all the programmes has continued to rise
in the 2022/2023 academic session.

The College experienced an increase in students’ enrolment in the MBBS and DDS
programmes. We are offering other professional Courses in the Medical Laboratory Science,
Pharmacy, Community Health, Dentistry, Radiography, Medicine, and graduated Nurses.
Welfare of staff is noted to be important to the management, many lecturers were promoted
during the year and salaries were increased generally.

The 2023/2024 Session started with the College of Medicine expanding into the Block B of the
ultramodern, three-storey building of the new College of Medicine Building within the University
Campus. The Block B is currently housing the Anatomy Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty
of Basic Clinical Sciences and Faculty of Clinical Sciences. In the new Block are Departmental
Offices (Public Health, Anatomy) Laboratories (Physiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics,
Haematology, Chemical Pathology, Anatomical Pathology, Medical Microbiology and
Parasitology), Staff offices (with their conveniences), classrooms, seminar rooms, lecture
theatres and a canteen to boot.
